How to motivate your subordinates

ADVERTISEMENTS

Most of us, at some time or other, have had to motivate not only our subordinates but our colleges as well; not only at work but may be at social service programmes and religious functions and even during political campaigns.

Sometimes it is so hard to motivate even ourselves to accomplish something, so motivating others to work together to achieve a predetermined goal is a tremendous challenge. We are putting forward some thought we think might be of some help to you in motivating people under you.

· Motivation through fear is very short lived. Being bullied or threatened builds up resentment and takes a toll on work-quality and worker-commitment. Work will be done grudgingly and loyalty will take a back seat. In the long run productivity will decrease rapidly and worker relationships deteriorate, leading to loss of revenue for the establishment.
· Although money is very important, it is not everything. Even a very hefty bonus might work negatively if you are unable to give the same amount the following year, negating your motivating efforts.

Avoid the big stick and wads of money as tools of motivating. Give the following try.
· To say thank you to your subordinate for extra effort made and extra time put in does not cost you anything but you may gain everything. This is especially important in voluntary work but no less at regular work place. Take note when someone goes the extra mile for the company or when a worker has to work late in to the night to finish a project. Let them know you are grateful for their contribution.
· A small gift, once in a while for your team can go a long way to build up that all important rapport you look for in your team. A lunch out or a box of chocolates can make your team feel they are being recognized and noticed which is an important factor for the successful accomplishment in a very friendly and pleasant atmosphere.
· There was a time work when work was governed by the amount of time spent in office; 8-5 or 8.30 to 5.30. Most companies are now changing over result – oriented office hours or RESULTS – ORIENTED WORK ENVIRONMENT; ROWE. If you give your team a deadline to finish a certain assignment and if they achieve it may be half day before that, they will be entitled to have that half day for themselves. If they can be granted that half day even unofficial, they will be very resourceful and productive the next time too!
· It is easy for an employee, who does a routine job, to feel unimportant and distanced from company goals. It is important for anyone to feel that they are part of the big picture. For this feeling of belongings to be achieved, frequent meeting with these workers, may be over lunch or tea, will go a long way.
· Chatting to your co-workers and your subordinates can work wonders for their feeling of being wanted and valued. After all everyone has an ago to satisfy. Find out what little things can be done for them that can make their life that much easier. It may not cost you much money-wise, but it will buy you a hell of loyalty and affection. That is motivation for you!

You will agree motivation by conviction lasts much longer that motivation through fear.
